A hot, stormy summer may be right around the corner. And that means more money spent on staying cool and high electricity bills. But recently Eversource announced they are dropping electricity rates in Western MA, this summer. And the really good news is that electricity customers may be able to shop even lower electricity rates in Amherst, Springfield, Pittsfield, and others!

Cause For Changing Electricity Rates

Electricity prices change so wildly for a number of reasons. The natural gas market can be volatile. Because natural gas fuels most electric generators, the price for electricity can also rise and fall dramatically. And the past few years has seen rates spike to some historic highs. Especially with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the War in Ukraine.

Since last fall, however, US natural gas production has risen. And because the winter was moderate, it left a surplus of natural gas in storage. So supply is high again and prices lower. But with summer heat building in southern states and later up north, these low prices won’t last long.

Eversource Basic Service Rates

At this time, Eversource’s Western MA customers were paying an average of 21.99 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). In 2021, MA used a monthly average of about 600 kWh of energy. And according to the NOAA 3-month forecast. this summer may be hotter-than-normal. So these rates would mean paying over $130 on just the supply portion of your Eversource electricity bill.

But now because Eversource customers in Western MA can expect lower rates starting July 1, the basic service rate drops to 14.85 cents per kWh. This new rate means any customer using 600 kWh of energy in a month, will only pay about $89 on the supply portion fo their bill. This rate is better by about 31%! Plus, it lasts from July to December.
