Great company, knowledgeable employees, only problem once u've used your fixed contract they get expensive from their on. They have good promo's, and now fair teaser rates, they used to be better. Highly responsible company so if rates are not the issue I highly recommend.

People wake up
Im Not in NRG but soon will be .. you people ALL of you who wrote a negative reply about NRG you need to understand that its not there fault as Humans beings we are all looking for that "DEAL" but how long do you really think its going to last yes they give you treats to join but they also mention that its INTRODUCTORY offer meaning its going to change and the funny part its right there in-front of you but like ALL humans Me included we dont read the fine print .. it clearly tells you that after the introductory offer that if you do not reply back your rate will go to a Variable until at which point you decide to reup with the Utility, People its YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to read your mail not NRGs so stop your bitchin and start reading enough said

Great experience
Great girl in the store, told me that the price would be promotional and I would need to call to lock in price after 3 months, now I get cash back on my bill and a right plan for myself, if you dont call your rate will go back to variable just like com Ed already does. Its really simple. Happy customer

it's worth it
I signed up with some guy in Walmart. I usually don't stop at those kind of things but he seemed so happy i had to see what it was all about. I signed up before thanksgiving. First bill i saved a few dollars. I noticed a difference when my bill went from $220 down to $175. I saw these reviews and noticed everyone saying the same thing. The very few writing 5 star reviews are satisfied with NRG's service. Call and keep the program. Everyone wants to write a bad review when something doesn't go their way. Nobody writes a good review, when it meets their expectations.

I called!
Whenever I look at the reviews from something, they are full of hate, and the bad reviews, not so much good, so I will leave my experience. It only took NRG to appear on my bill, and when they did my bill went down $137. They had me put a reminder in my phone to call them back in three months, and when I called I got the 5% cash back, and my rate was still really low. Now I'm earning money back for my electric. It's like being paid to use electric. I would highly recommend them.

I read all the 1 star reviews and realize they all have something in common. You people were stupid and never called back after the 3 month promotion to keep the fixed rate, like the rep said.
I would highly recommend NRG, just dont be stupid and not call back when the rep says, because yes the rates go to variable if you don't call back. Just as they say. Give NRG some credit.

The Truth
The rep in walmart was very informative, and honest with my rates. I even went to the energy choice website and made sure the company was lagit. I told the rep the first time that I wanted to do more research because I had read the reviews over and over again. What I had found out was, the rep was telling me all the truth.
I would highly recommend this company as your supplier. They have saved me $67 a month for the past few month, then I called back to renew my rate.

NRG Manager here to clarify
Rates are adjusted QUARTERLY to undercut the distributor and that is why our plans are 3 months long. March, June, September, and December are the months to call and check in. A good rep will explain that to you multiple times before the end of the signup, but if they did not it is also in writing on the email confirmation, cancellation form, and welcome letter you will receive. What some folks fail to understand is that we cannot possibly remember every face nor force people to pick up the phone or stop in for the 3 minutes it takes to renew your account and always make sure youre saving a few bucks. YOU MUST EITHER CALL TO RENEW OR TO CANCEL TO AVOID THE VARIABLE RATES. I try my absolute best to inform people to the best of my abilities but I can't speak on anyone else's behalf. I wish things were a little clearer and that folks were trained better, but unfortunately that is over my head and I did feel compelled to write this to clarify that it is the customer's responsibility to maintain their account. We have hundreds of thousands of customers, reminder emails get lost and we cannot possibly remember every face, so please put your dates on your calendars.
We are a good company that does a ton of charity work, employ thousands of Americans, and are working on better technology to generate cleaner energy for our future generations.
I hope this helps.

This isnt a bad company to go with as a supplier. Although the rep told me that the rates go up after the three months of service, i forgot to call to keep my fixed rate. I had noticed that my bill had gone up, and I called customer service, and they were able to fix the rate once again for two years. Reminder to just call after the three months to keep the fixed rate, don't forget like I did. That's why it had gone up to variable.

Twice the price!
Initially seemed like a good deal and they offered incentives. Never recieved the incentives and my current rate is more than twice the standard. Not only a let down, but financially harmful when you get a bill obsurdly high, while living on a fixed income. Seems the phrase "thank you for your Service" is a precursor for seperating those in need from their financial resources. Nothing like being a Disabled Vet on a fixed income who serving as Hospice for a dying relative, while being taken advantage of by a utility provider. Beyond that, their Customer Service Rep and their Street Team, Marketing Reps were very personable. Not a people issue, a practice and procedure issue.

Rates get ridiculously high quickly
Signed up and rep was nice, customer service is nice but if you are in a variable rate agreement you better check your rates closely. Got the rate I signed up for 2 months and then it went up 23% in month 3 and another 16% in month 4....really!!!!! I beleive this company just takes advance of people. Still with the utility providers, at least they have to justify their rates with the public utility commission!

2.8 times what the default utility rate was!
I dont know how these folks sleep at night, honestly. My elderly mom who is on a fixed income got talked into switching to this company while she was shopping in Walmart because they were touting supporting renewable energy solutions and she wanted to be a good citizen and support that. Long story short, that shopping trip cost her a total of $541.09 over the past 10 months. Her most recent electric bill for her modest 1500 square foot home was for $826.25 for one month!! I looked at what the default utility rate on that bill was and she paid $352.89 MORE ON ONE BILL than she would have had she not switched. These folks are predatory criminals. They should be ashamed!

NRG sells you the systems, then sells off the lease contract to Spruce Power. NRG passes on servicing and customer is stuck with a Spruce Power who does nothing, no return calls, no emails. Makes one thing that about the relationship. In the end , customer and consumer are screwed.

Watch out for rate hikes
I signed up for a limited time (3 months) discounted rate. I knew that my rate would go up, but not to DOUBLE the price of Duke energy! Not to mention, NRG did not even honor the first three month discount. My rates started systematically hiking after just two months until I was paying nearly double what I would have been paying with Duke. I'm embarrassed that I did not look at my rates earlier as I had a feeling this would turn out bad. Of course, I could not look at my rates because there does not appear to be any sort of online account that gives me this sort of transparency. I was also on hold with their support center for way too long, but that's what you'd expect out of a company like this.

NRG Doubled my rate in December
The sales guy got me at Menards. He worked for NRG Engery. He showed me the rates and I asked him if he could show me the fine print details, especially as it relates to cancellation. He said he would email them to me and had me enter my email on a tablet and click the box that I want to receive correspondence. I did so and it turns out that one action signed me up for the service. I was livid and called the company to make a complaint about this man. I was going to sign up anyway but being tricked into it was no cool.
Anyway...that bit of sleaze and slime aside I enjoyed a low energy rate for six months. My mistake was that I did not select a new provider to take effect before the variable rate changed. When it changed in the month of December (yes during the holidays) I did not have my eye on the ball and the rate doubled from almost six cents per kWh to nearly 12 cents. My electric bill is already on the high side because we have electric heat so this snafu meant we got a bill for over $1000!!! The following month was $800 because it takes times for the providers to be changed. Those bills should have been half those amounts so I threw away roughly $900.

Like others, I signed up for a promotional rate with an offer of free airline points. The good rate held steady for several months, then it went from less than 5 cents, to 5 1/2 cents, to 9 cents and then up to 12 cents. It happened before I realized it. There was no notification. Are they within their rights? I guess so if they don't mind losing my business.

False Advertising from Salespeople - THEY LIE, PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED!
NRG salespeople are liars, not once, but twice I was told that they their electric rates would be lower than Duke Energy. I was not told by either salesperson that it was only for the first 3 months. After 3 months the rate went from 5.8 cents per kWh to 7.95 cents per kWh to 9.7 cents per kWh the next month and for the next 7 months it stayed at 11.9 cents kWh. Meanwhile Duke energy rates averaged 5.7 cents per for the whole year. I even saw the salesperson again in the same store when he came up to me to try to sell me again and I told him my electric bill had skyrocketed and he told me again that the rates should be lower than Duke Energy and that I should call and complain. He even wrote down the number. I called them today and am awaiting a call back from the manager. I cancelled my service last month and they said it will take 2 months to cancel my service, which means I will be billed for the next 2 months at the OUTRAGEOUS rate of 11.9 cents per kWh, while Duke Energy rate is 5.62 cents per kWh. I'm sure I am not the only person this has happened to. If anyone knows of a class action suit against them, please share.

Non-existent customer support and huge rate hikes.
I got burned by NRG a year ago after their huge rate increases month-after-month once my first promo ended. I decided to try again to get the Southwest miles promo offer, knowing I need to cancel or renegotiate rates 1 month before my promo ends. The problem is, you can't get through to customer service. Hold times go over 30 minutes, and their emails go unanswered for a week and when they finally reply, they say they can't discuss by email so I have to call again. Tried calling again but couldn't get through - endless hold times. I then sent an email to cancel and it took 2 more weeks for them to process and say okay, that'll take 1-2 months. I was being super pro-active but now I'm going to be stuck with them for up to 2 extra months at what will likely be insanely high, undisclosed rates. I even wanted to stay as their customer if they could lock me in to a good rate, but nobody would pick up the phone to talk!!! If I were CEO of this company, I'd be absolutely furious of how their operations are run.

Got sucked in based upon getting some American Airlines miles. Four months later, I was paying over .70 cents per therm when everyone else is at .36 cents per therm. Did not realize how much it was until 18 months later due to a billing/credit card error when I got a $3,000 bill. When I called to discuss it, they kept saying how they were not obligated to do anything but would refund me $380 out of the outstanding charge. Never again!

Be Careful
I was in Sam's club shopping a guy stopped me and he convinced me to switch that it would save me money. It was great at the .056 rate and then after 3 months it jumped to .072 and then .097. He did tell me it was variable but in over 5 years it has never gone above .067 with the other provided I had.
So i called and they wrote me a check for $150 to get me back to the .056 rate and then i cancelled after cashing that check. They called me back the following month because they were going to give me a check again if it didn't drop back to the .056 rate and since I had cancelled they said well we aren't giving you a check.
So in the end the game is if you like the introductory rate you can keep that rate but you must call every 2 months to lock in that rate because it takes 1 month before the rate goes into effect so if you wait 3 months, which is when the introductory rate ends then you are stuck with whatever jacked up rate they are going to charge on that 4th month.
Bottom line I was never told I could lock in intro rates after the "intro rate" and I ended up basically lighting $600 on fire over a 6 month period of time and now I am going back to Duke Energy. I also read that NRG is not bound by the same regulations as Duke Energy and other electricity companies so they don't have to justify the price hike on their rates... but a terrible company and if this is how they have to make money shame on them. Won't ever switch again! lesson learned!

Cheaters - Please do not switch
Every month my electricity bill is going up and have been in this house of mine for past 20 years. Never seen such drastic increase given any weather conditions or extra use of power . Switching from First energy is a big mistake - they were consistently the same basic charge every month. Wasted my time comparing bills before and after the switch and found the culprit to be NRG charges. Not sure if i can switch back as I may be under 1 yr contract. Sincere Advise - Don't fall for salespeople standing in Walmart to convert you over from one energy company to other. When I switched NRG rates were 0.01 cents less than first energy - now they are way beyond any competitor. What a mistake it was to fall into this trap. Obviously they have to pay them for selling - they get it from you eventually. Trust with marketing is dwindling in the industry as we are all fall into the traps which have conditional statements written in small that always get the customer. I am so disgruntled. Again - all if you want to waste your money - go take dollar bills and put it in garbage every month but don't give it to this energy company who do not keep their work.

Bad business
My mistake to not address the increase in my bill much sooner. They doubled the rate after a few months and conduct their business counting on people not remembering to contact them after the promotion and not checking the rate increase on their bill. They certainly made some extra revenue on my account. This is exactly why I never went with an energy company other than PECO before and will not do it again. It is a bait and switch practice and unfortunately I took the bait. It cost me close to $700 more than what I would have paid with PECO. Posting to help others not make the same mistake I did. Ibasically had the same experience as everyone else did with a bad review. My electric bill went through the roof. I called to cancel. They told me it would take 1-2 billing cycles to see it was canceled. 2 cycles go by...they are still my electric provider. I call again. Customer service tells me it was never canceled. At this point Im upset. So I was told it was canceled and a manger will be calling the next day for compensation for the next 2 months I have to wait for the electric provider change to go through the system. I received no call from a manager the next day... I then called again. I was transferred to a manager...I was then told by the manager that I still was not canceled. And the only way to cancel was through a manager...So I complained about them not canceling the first time I called... the manger then told me that all it says in the notes in my account was that I called about the rates being to high...nothing about canceling....so he would have to pull the tape from my original call to make sure I told the customer service rep I wanted to cancel...(wow). I then called my electric company (national grid). I told them my situation, they put me back on my original plan I had before I went through NRG and told me it would take 1 billing cycle to see the change. They also provided a number to place a compliant with New York State. It is NYS Public Service Commission. So please if this happens to you call your public commission, so companies like this can be stopped.

I signed up for both gas & electric because the salesman told me it would save me money and was good for the environment. And, for the electric one, they also gave me bonus miles.
What they did not tell me was a) it would cost more $1.5k MORE than comed or people's gas over the course of 1.5 yrs.
The only way to get a $150 check back is to sign on for another year -- and then the low rate only lasts 2 months and you'd have to call again. (PS - the airline miles come at a higher rate -- I didn't even want them!)
Now I am out $1,500 for nothing. What a waste of money and a fraudulent company. They say they aren't fraudulent b/c the fine print tells you that the rate is variable and can go up. Righhhhhht.

For all those people saying others are stupid for not listening to the rep saying you have to call after the promotion period, hear me out. THE SALES PERSON DID NOT TELL ME YOU HAD TO DO THIS. In fact, the guy straight up LIED TO MY FACE and said it was a fixed rate, which is completely FALSE. I also did not give him permission to sign me up, I told him straight up, I'd have to discuss this with my S.O. before I commit to anything, yet he somehow weaseled his way to manipulate me into signing some shit, saying he WASNT signing me up, that it was just for future reference that'll make signing up easier and I'd be added to the mailing list. When I got home and checked my email, I called immediately to cancel. Someone called me later that day to survey me on my experience. This lady was extremely unenthused and rude. The same rep who got me to sign up harasses me every single time I come into the store. He was aggressive and nasty to me ever since. I've had to tell managment of the walmart they post up in about this experience because its extremely unprofessional. slowly increased bill so i would'nt notice
If you go through NRG as an energy supplier you need to check your statements! We have been getting high electric bills so we thought we would solve the problem and get a wood stove. I have just checked our meter because our bill should be coming any day now and i was excited to see what our bill would go down to.
We've used 1350 kwh this month. similar to last January 2018 the difference is we were charged 0.0540000 X 1350 kwh= the cost of energy usage, then with the fees our bill was 161. < this was AEPs rate.
We were offered what they said a better rate. so we took it in February. It was 0.0560000 X kwh < which is'nt better but i did'nt know any different to look at the bill and know what i was looking at. after a couple months they raised the price. to 0.1190000.
so this Dec/January we are being charged 160.65 ALONE for usage
last January we paid 72.90 for usage and a total bill of 161.
i called the supplier and they said too bad so sad that we didn't call them after the 3 month contract they didn't tell us about so our cost went up.
our meter has not been read yet so we will yet again get another high bill because NRG says it will take 3-30 buisness days for it to cancel. i am NOT happy.
485$ we overpaid since june (when the rate doubled!) - june-january
DONT - Pick NRG
i will not stop writing bad reviews until you make this right. i already have alot of people canceling your service after hearing my story!

I felt sorry for myself that I just noticed my rate was too high. NRG representative lied. He did not explain to us to call every 3 months to update the rate. I called the NRG and asked why our rate is .109 and said we never called before the promotional rate ends. Ridiculous! Rep never said anything about that. Sadly they will still bill us for 2 months after cancelling them. Being screwed for over a year.

So, I've just figured out that going with NRG on my home and several rental properties has cost me nearly $4,000.00 (YES FOUR THOUSAND $$) in the last six month. I have my account set up to be automatically paid and they are set on budget billing. So, I get alerts that tell my the amount of each bill, but its only at the end of the year that the budget billing # goes up or down. You can imagine how I felt when I saw astronomical raises in budget billing. For example one property went from 261 to 456. I couldn't imagine what those occupants were doing!! Since one was my home, I knew something was off. When I signed on with NRG, I got a low rate (4.7) with a three month freeze knowing that it go up. Of course I figured it would go up to a fairly normal market price. I reviewed the contract and it is limited to 30 percent per month, but I didn't think that would be the minimum. Right now my rate is over 14.1. I guess next month will be 18.3, followed by 23.8, 30.9 and then 40.15. WOW. that rate would make my bill 1,127 at home as compared to 261. Well, thankfully the end of the year came and I was notified by Ameren that my budget billing was going up to 456. Of course Ameren wasn't looking at the 30 percent monthly hikes either--had they done that they would have been able to see that by the end of the year, the rate would have increased from .13 to .31. Not even Ameren would foresee the $261 going up to over 1,000. I guess the idea is to rip me off as long as you can until I get wise. How greedy can you get?

Same as others , signed up for slightly lower rates and told this would be ongoing. I'm on budget payment so power company estimates monthly bill based on previous usage then there is a balloon payment at end of year. Problem is NRG more than doubled my rate after a few months without my knowledge leading to a bill over $700 more than previous years. The call every 3 months is bullshit, no one should have to do that and if they raise your rate they should be required to inform you. NOTHING MORE THAT A RIP OFF SCAM . DON'T DO IT.

I signed up with NRG after talking with a rep several months back. At first it seemed great because I was saving a few bucks on my electricity by going with them. After the 3 month contract special was up they kicked me into a higher priced tier for the next three months with my bill going up all three months. Even though I used less electricity in Feb 2020 it was even higher than Jan. My rate increased twice in the last 3 months.

Where I sit is right in front of a floor vent. When ever the heat goes on, there is a blast of cold air right at me.
They sent a specialist to check the heater and after checking it out he said I should shut down the vent. WHAT? My old heater was fine, now Im freezing.

I switched to NRG to get a Southwest Airlines promotional reward (miles). The intro rate was lower than I was paying. However, over time they increased my rates to 2.5 times market rates. Shame on me for not noticing right away. When I noticed I switched back to BG&E as my supplier, reduced my rates from over $.15 to under $.07 per kWh. This is their business model. They lure people in with promotions and teaser rates and then count on the fact that most don't analyze their bill each month and/or the fact that the process to switch back isn't transparent or easy to figure out. I will say that once I called they offered to reduce my rates and when I persisted in saying I wanted to end the relationship the woman I spoke to did so readily.

I contacted my previous supplier, Penelec and inquired about their rate. (the company NRG promised to be cheaper than) They quoted me a rate of HALF what I am currently paying with NRG. When I called to cancel the operator said that after 3 months my account went to variable and that yes I was paying a much higher rate. WOW....pretty much blatant theft right there. DO NOT fall for their sales pitch. This company is corrupt in their business practices and has infuriated many customers according to their reviews. Total scam. In Chicago they try to sign you up in Menards. They are charging rates twice the amount you would be charged using ComEd. They charge 0.119 when
ComEd charges 0.071 per kWH. It 67 % on top of what you should be paying.
I asked them to provide me with the written contract. Did not get it from the. The bill comes from the ComED. I thought that the ComED is rising the prices but when I called ComED they said that it is a third party provider not them, who is charging me such a higher rates. I never got any letter from them. They just operate the call center and singn poeple in at WalMart, Menrads... This is a total fraud. Lack of transparancy , lack of proper billing. I filed a complain with Illinois Commerce Commision. I was told that people file the complains against NRG Retail Solution with the Illinois Commerce Commision.
If I did not call ComEd and complained about the higher rates I would be still paying high rates. The cancellation of the contract takes two billing cycles ( two months ).

They offer a lower rate, which is true on paper, but the fees made my bill the same as paying the supplier directly, which I had been before. You get an annual check, which was decent the first year. But the second year they increased the rates by 50%, and the check was much smaller. This year my bills have DOUBLED what they were a year ago, which was already 50% higher than the year before that. The check I got recently was almost nothing. I made sure nothing in the contract said they could do this before I signed anything, so they are doing this without telling you, even in the fine print. The bill I opened today was over $200, and shows I use less kWHs for that billing period than I did for that period a year ago, when my bill was less than $100. Stay the hell away from this company.

Now Last months bill was almost 800 I contacted the electric company I have NEVER had an electric bill so high, and of course, it was explained as to why it was so high...of course, my electric billing provider can't do anything because I was promised a different rate by this electric provider which ended up being a LOT higher....costing me triple the amount of what I have ever paid in the past! When I contacted customer service the only concern was getting me to stay, not in helping me resolve the issue while in the midst of a pandemic while I am fighting covid a month later. I am so disgusted and disappointed!!! DO NOT UTILIZE this provider unless you want a massive bill!!!

They approached my mother in Sam's Club with a fancy sales pitch so she went for it. Then after a free months she was hit with hundreds of dollars in fees, and a higher rate. My mother who is retired on disability went from $175/month on electric to well over $700 without warning. When we contacted Duke, they said these kind of providers are unregulated and can basically do whatever they want when it comes to charges. I don't know how they can sleep at night.

NRG's Pricing Prowess
This review discusses NRG's pricing and their role as an alternative supplier of electricity. They supply the electricity to my provider, PP&L, so comment on that role actually describes my entire experience with NRG. I relied upon NRG as having trading experience and knowledge that might produce a better price than PP&L. Instead, I paid NRG 15.9 cents per KWH throughout this past winter (2020-2021), while PP&L was charging less than 8 cents. That gap is so wide as to contradict any real attempt at competition or skill at trading. It was a cold winter and I paid bills of $500-$800 per month. Before I was allowed to cancel, proposals from NRG's rep included price discounts for 3 months that would beat PP&L's pricing. That told me that NRG was ready to charge excessively high prices to existing customers to enable costly discounts to new (or renewing) customers. I will not do business with this outfit again.

He stated that I ll save lot of money by switching from duke energy to NRG
At the end I was not confident I left without signing anything
He said anyway you ll receive a call from 800 number if you agree to switch to NRG give them the ok
I received many call from the 800 number but did not answer none of them.
Since the day I talk to this employee my electrical bill went up every month till I reached the bill of $480 I called duke energy they said that s because of the third party supplier that I did not even I had.
I was paying my bill without even checking what s in there
Instead of getting charged for 0.054 kwh I was charged for 0.094 kwh for the last 6 months.

Buyer Beware
As many others of talked about in their reviews, the company's business model appears to be attract you into an introductory offer, then charge obscenely high rates in the hope that you will pay your bills without paying attention. In my case, I have been paying .10790/kwh for the electricity portion of my bill, while PECO rates were .0627/kwh. When I called NRG, they wanted to offer me a new promotional rate.....I guess this works for someone who will stay on top of their tactics, but not for me. As it turns out, I have been paying out of market rates for many years.

I ran into a young lady at Walmart that convinced me to switch over after showing me how much money they could save me. My bill was about the same (everything they "saved" me in electric fees they made up for in rider charges). I was fine with this, since I couldn't tell a difference in the total amount I was paying. After 6 months my bills shot up hundreds of dollars more than what I was paying before (comparing to the same months last year). When I finally had 2 straight bills over $700, I had to call and cancel. Be prepared for looooong wait times if you try to call and cancel.

Bad Walmart Enrollment Experience
On 7/19/21 I made the mistake of enrolling with a salesperson while shopping at Walmart. The salesperson looked up my rate online and showed me that NRG's rate was more than 20% lower than my current rate through Duke Energy. When I got home, I reviewed my latest bill and the rate I was paying was actually lower than NRG's rate. I immediately filed NRG's "Notice of Cancellation" form via email. They responded that they could not cancel it, that I had to call Duke Energy (current supplier) to cancel. I called Duke Energy on 7/20/21, explained the situation and they told me that they would take care of it. On 7/27/21 I got a letter from Duke stating that NRG would be my new supplier unless I called Duke to cancel. I called Duke on 7/28/21 to cancel NRG for the second time. Hopefully this is the end of it.

They must get 1000 complaints a day and they do not do anything to satisfy the customer! Imagine a normal gas bill in the winter being around $80 then add another $70 if you have NRG! Why have NRG?? BEWARE
I will say, that if you are very very good at maintaining contact with them every 3 months to "renew your rate." There is a possibility they could save you money. PLEASE if you risk it with this company, READ THE FINE PRINT and fully understand what you are getting yourself into. Their business model is bogus and they hook people with their promotion prices and then slowly raise your rate in the background without notification (unless you are on a 6 or 12 month plan apparently). This is where it gets confusing for me. I don't recall being given this option, but of course the people that work at stands in Walmart on commission are probably told to push the 3 month plan to make more $ because people will obviously forget to call in and renew their rate every 3 months. There is zero integrity in this company. It's all a promotion and then they can just raise your rate as high as they want once that promotion is over, unless you call for a new promotion. Our current electric bill is over $1,000! In the middle of a February snow storm, they had the audacity to charge double the normal rate for my fully electric home to my younger brother and 8 month old son. I guess we freeze to death or starve. They have been way over charging me for electricity since April 2021 and I had ZERO clue that I was supposed to call them for a lower rate. I take some responsibility for not reading the fine print. But calling to renew every 3 or even 6 months in the middle of pregnancy, raising a baby, and death of a family member is ABSURD. Unless you are hyper organized and can remember to call them regularly, I would just stay FAR FAR away. There's too many things going on in life at any given time that's what they are banking on. That you will forget, not notice the increase over time and then make a killing off of you.

Long story short, that shopping trip cost her a total of $541.09 over the past 10 months. Her most recent electric bill for her modest 1500 square foot home was for $826.25 for one month!! I signed up at Walmart and received a gift card, not realizing the rate offered was only valid for 3 months. Since I pay my electric bill with autopay, I never really paid attention to the cost of electricity. I signed at a rate of 0.07 per kwh. After 3 months, I come to learn now that they raised my rate to 0.09 per kwh. Within a year, I was up to 0.12 per kwh, nearly double. When I asked why this was done, they said because I did not call them back to lock in for an extended rate. I asked if it was due to utility pricing and they said no. They raised the rate because they could, not because energy prices went up. They can raise your rate 30% in one month if they choose and you do not lock in a set rate. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE

With prices rising again, I decided in June 2022 to look for yet another alternate supplier. I decided to go back to nrg, whose plans and promotions looked favorable. Called customer service on June 7th and re-enrolled. After I went through the whole process on the phone, I was transferred to a third party verification source, which I understand is common in the industry. The third party verification representative wanted to know what name was on my account for my main supplier. I responded that I couldn't remember if my middle name was included or not and to wait a moment while I checked my last statement. She hung up. So I called NRG back and asked if the non-verification meant that I was not enrolled. Apparently, that's exactly what it DID mean, so I went through the whole process again with the NRG representative and with the third party verification representative. At this time, I was provided a confirmation number by the NRG representative and a verification number by the third party. I didn't hear from NRG after that and only called back on July 18th after a letter in the mail from my current alternate supplier that my rate was changing in August. I figured I had better double check with NRG about the enrollment process. Despite the fact that I provided a confirmation number and a verification number, I was told that I was not enrolled and that they didn't know the reason why. So, at that point, I spoke with another representative from NRG, who typed out the entire explanation of this episode and forwarded it to a support team at nrg. He gave me an "issue number" as a reference to use in confirming that I was enrolled from that point. He assured me that I would be. I thought I would give it a few days and call again to be sure, which I did on July 21st. Lo and behold, I was told by the representative that the support team responded to the representative, and ONLY the representative, not to ME: "the customer has to re-enroll!". JFC... what did they think I had been TRYING to do for the last 6 weeks? I was so annoyed when I spoke to the representative on July 21st that I'm afraid I used an expletive to describe an activity that is anatomically not possible. (). And I immediately called another alternative supplier and enrolled with them, cuz it is evident to me that NRG doesn't know its ass from Page 9.

In PA and signed up for a 12 month plan at a decent rate, however, when the plan ended, the rate went up 160% - which is significantly higher than PPL's base rate!! They mentioned they sent a letter, however I did not see anything except wording that even without a contract, the rate would be competitive! We had no access to a written contract with all info lady on the phone was saying until 3 weeks later and what we had didn't match with her info. NRG rates went up from 38¢ to 92¢ at the end of three month contract
Singed up at Walmart NRG service for a three-month contract. Since I had paperless billing and auto-pay, didn't pay much attention to the billing details. Due to the onset of Winter, thought that the high billing was due to the high usage of gas heating.
But when I checked the billing statements for the last few months, realized they have increased the gas rates from 38¢ to 92¢ as I didn't renew the contract. I was royally screwed on an average of $125 per month.
When I called customer service, they tried to give me a credit of $30. Even if I want to renew the contract, the new offered price of 38¢ won't be effective until 1-2 billing cycles which is ridiculous. So they want me to spend another $250 more when compared to PECO. If I want to cancel the service, again the same story - 1-2 billing cycles.
So don't fall for the NRG reps trying to lure you to sign up. STAY away from NRG.

Deceptive Practices, Rude, Can't do basic math
My wife was approached by one of these guys in a walmart. He yelled at her from about 4 aisles down and then began going to work. After he got her to sign up she called me (I was at work), and she told me she had lowered our electric bill by signing up with NRG. They had "locked us in at .09/Kwh for 2 years. AEP was charging us .112/Kwhr! He looked at our bill and showed me!" The problem there was that our city recently switched to an aggregate and our rates are actually only .062/Kwhr which is much lower than AEP charges. After I got off work, I went over to the walmart to ask questions to the guy since it didn't make sense to me how raising our rate by almost 50% was going to save us money. When I approached him and let him know my wife signed up earlier and I had questions, he asked who my wife was. I told him and he goes, "Oh, is she the...not trying to be rude..." and made a sweeping gesture with his hands to mime a heavier set person. HOW IS THAT NOT RUDE?! And then when I started asking questions about how a rate that's about 50% higher than our current one would save us money. He straight up told me that 9 is not 50% higher than 6. I made him pull out his calculator to make him understand basic math. These guys do not care what you pay, it is their job just to sign you up. He saw our bills and knew we had a lower rate and lied to my wife and got her to sign up to a higher rate, and then body shamed her to me. AVOID NRG AT ALL COSTS!! These guys are never looking out for your best interests, they just want you sign up so they get their commission.

NRG-Worst Energy Company in NJ
I was marketed by a person in Walmart for the better pricing. But that plans works only first 3 months later I should call them and remind every 3 months which I didnt do and they just only one email(overlooked) as reminder and they kept charging me flexible pay and I lost around $300 thru billing gradual increase every month.

Not truthful
Was in kroger today minding my own business and this guys says hello I say it back and he tried to get me to acknowledge switching my aes for this company without reading anything. He kept saying scroll to the bottom NOPE I READ THINGS... It said by saying yes you acknowledge to switch over to this company. So I tell him I will not until I get home to read it he then gets an attitude and says we'll it expires in 5 mins so you can't. No thank you I do not sign things without reading it bit nice try .

They have been charging my dead father for 10 months and still won't close his account
They have been charging my dead father for 10 months and still won't close his account. I have been calling every month or two since January. They always tell me it is in the process of transferring but they can't do it yet until somebody takes over his place. They have someone else call me back in two weeks to tell me the same thing. It has now been 10 months and I have a bill for over $500. His electricity was turned off 9 months ago. They are just stealing his money. It is coming up to the day where I can close his account but they still have not removed this bill. They are a horrible company with horrible customer service. Be aware they will cheat you out of money.

NRG THOSE SNEEKY BAS^%$DS
Didn't email, mail or call to notify my 6 month contract was about to expire as they are required to do and instead started charging we 17 cents per kWH instead of the 10 cents on my contract. I'd suggest finding some one else to sign up with.

Ruuuun Awaaay from NRG - Price gougers.....
These guys charge you 16.9 cents per kwh when you can get rates today (1/10/20) as low as 9.8 and avg around 12.5. For my average 2100 KWH/mth at 16.9 cents, my supplier cost is $354. At avg 12.5 cents my cost would have been $263, an overcharge of about $90 per month. If you shop, you could get a rate of 9.8 cents, or in my case, a supply cost of $206. Now, who wants to pay $354/mth to NRG, or, $206/mth to a competitor????? Stupid me, just caught this and I have been gouged for $150/mth EXTRA for 5 years!!!!! CHECK YOUR BILL!!! DO NOT PAY 16.9 CENTS TO NRG WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER COMPETITORS OUT THERE, THAT WON'T CHEAT SENIOR CITIZENS, OR ANY OTHER VICTIM THEY CAN FIND. Oh, by the way, I never signed up with NRG, I thought they were Eversource's default supplier... Just sayin'... Ruuuuuuuun from NRG.....
