Luckily, programs like Energy Star help homes and businesses cut costs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maenergyratings.com\/resources\/10-quick-energy-saving-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">save energy<\/a>. But now, federal officials are planning to reorganize the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and end the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2025\/05\/06\/energy-star-program-epa-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Energy Star program<\/a>. As a result, rate payers could see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maenergyratings.com\/ma-electricity-rates-by-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Massachusetts electric rates<\/a> rise faster. In turn, that may result in cuts to the MASS SAVE program. But why cut Energy Star, especially since it provides MA consumer savings on energy bills?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What Is Energy Star?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Energy partnered with the EPA to start the Energy Star program in 1992. The program gives appliances and products a special label if they meet energy efficiency standards. This means that &#8220;Energy Star certified&#8221; products use less energy and cost less to use than other products.  Since 1992, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/about?s=mega\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Star<\/a> has managed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Save 5 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity.<\/li><li>Cut more than $500 billion in energy costs.<\/li><li>Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 4 billion metric tons.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2018, Energy Star and their partners have served over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/asset\/document\/State_Fact_Sheet_MA_508.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3.1 million MA customers<\/a>. Over 25,000 homes and 780 buildings have earned the Energy Star. This includes 91 schools, 35 hotels, and 4 hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, Energy Star cuts energy use and saves money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Consumer Savings If Energy Star Ends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these benefits, efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/trump-administration-plans-end-energy-star-program-home-appliances-washington-2025-05-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reorganize the EPA<\/a> include ending federal programs focused on climate change and air quality. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/06\/climate\/energy-star-trump#:~:text=%E2%80%9CFor%20just%20$32%20million%20a,for%20every%20federal%20dollar%20invested.%E2%80%9D&amp;text=A%20person%20works%20on%20the,.%20on%20April%2010,%202025.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">EPA spokesperson told CNN<\/a> the agency would focus on providing clean air, water, and land to the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, critics argue that this will instead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/may\/07\/energy-star-program-ends-utility-bills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raise energy bills<\/a>. They point out that without Energy Star labels, it will be harder to find efficient appliances. In turn, this would go against the administration&#8217;s promise to cut home energy costs. They also argue that Energy Star has a small budget of $32 million per year. So the benefits more than make up for the costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What Can MA Consumers Do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s uncertain right now, but if Energy Star ends, then it will affect the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masssave.com\/en\/get-started\/homeowners\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mass Save<\/a> program.
